Solar Academy

The Solar Academy, located on the Southwest Applied Technology College campus, provides online courses and hands-on training for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. As a Solar Academy student, you will gain the necessary skills to design, install, and maintain grid-direct and battery-based solar PV systems. Students completing specific courses will meet the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) training requirements to take the PV Associate Exam, PV Installation Professional Exam, or the PV Technical Sales Exam.

COURSE NAME
GRID-DIRECT SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS (BEGINNING)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides a basic understanding of grid-direct solar photovoltaic (PV) systems based on the NABCEP PV Associate Learning Objectives.  During the online training, students will learn the theory behind solar energy, including identifying how the system’s location and orientation affects energy output.  At the conclusion of this course, students will have gained the necessary skills to design a simple residential-sized grid-direct solar PV system using solar PV modules, inverter(s), and balance of system components (BOS).

NABPCEP PV ASSOCIATE EXAM

Upon completion of Solar Fundamentals 1A & 1B, students will meet the training requirements to take the NABCEP PV Associate Exam.  The cost of the NABCEP PV Associate Exam is not included in the course fees and is considered a separate cost.

BATTERY-BASED SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS (BEGINNING)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides a basic understanding of battery-based solar photovoltaic (PV) systems based on the NABCEP PV Associate Learning Objectives.  During the online training, students will learn the theory behind energy storage, including identifying how much energy is lost when charging and discharging batteries.  At the conclusion of this course, students will have gained the necessary skills to design a simple residential-sized battery-based solar PV system using solar PV modules, charge controller(s), batteries, inverter(s), and balance of system components (BOS).

 

PREREQUISITS

  • Solar Fundamentals 1A – Grid-Direct Solar Photovoltaic Systems (Beginning) or with special permission from the instructor.

PREREQUISITS

  • Solar Fundamentals 1B – Battery-Based Solar Photovoltaic Systems (Beginning) or with special permission from the instructor.
